FBI Unveils New Details on New Orleans Attacker's International Travel and Use of Meta Glasses
Washington DC [US], January 6: The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has revealed significant findings about Shamsud Din Jabbar, the attacker responsible for the New Orleans attack on New Year’s night, which resulted in 15 fatalities, including the attacker.
According to an FBI press release, Jabbar had traveled to Cairo, Egypt (June 22–July 3, 2023) and later visited Ontario, Canada (July 10–13, 2023) before returning to the US. Authorities are currently investigating his activities, meetings, and potential connections during these trips.
Additionally, Jabbar made two prior visits to New Orleans in October and November 2024. During his October stay, he rented a property and used Meta smart glasses to record video footage while cycling through the French Quarter. These glasses, resembling ordinary eyewear, allow users to record hands-free photos and videos and even live stream content.
During the New Year’s attack on Bourbon Street, Jabbar was reportedly wearing the Meta glasses but did not activate them for live streaming. Investigators confirmed that he planted two Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in ice coolers at strategic locations in the French Quarter before driving his vehicle into a crowd.
The devices were fitted with a remote detonator, which was found inside Jabbar’s vehicle. The FBI successfully recovered both IEDs without detonation.
The investigation established that Jabbar was an ISIS supporter. Authorities found an ISIS flag in his vehicle and discovered videos online where he declared his allegiance to the extremist group.
Earlier, US President Joe Biden confirmed Jabbar’s use of IEDs and his intent to cause maximum destruction. He praised the FBI and law enforcement agencies for preventing further devastation by neutralizing the explosives in time.
The FBI continues to investigate Jabbar’s international connections and any affiliations with extremist networks. Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to ensure public safety.
