A Respected Legal Mind

Jessica Aber was appointed as the U.S. Attorney for EDVA in 2021 by President Joe Biden. A seasoned prosecutor, Aber had begun her career in the district in 2009, working on cases involving financial fraud, public corruption, violent crime, and child exploitation. She also served in leadership roles, including as Deputy Chief of the Criminal Division.

From 2015 to 2016, she held a detailed assignment as counsel to the Assistant Attorney General at the Department of Justice’s Criminal Division.

She resigned from her role when President Donald Trump took office, following a common practice where newly elected administrations appoint their own attorneys.

Tributes From the Legal Community

Current EDVA U.S. Attorney Erik S. Siebert issued a heartfelt statement, describing Aber as “unmatched” in her leadership and commitment to justice.

“We remain in awe of how much she accomplished in her all too brief time in this world. Her professionalism, grace, and legal acumen set the standard,” Siebert said.

“Though we are devastated by this loss, each of us in the Eastern District of Virginia will look to her example and endeavor to live up to that standard.”

Aber, a Virginia native, spent nearly her entire professional life in service to her home state, and her passing has left a void in the U.S. legal community.
