French Inmate Escapes Prison by Hiding in Cellmate’s Laundry Bag: Officials Call It a Major Security Failure
[Lyon, France] – July 14, 2025 — A 20-year-old French inmate has sparked a nationwide manhunt after escaping from Corbas prison near Lyon by hiding inside his cellmate’s laundry bag as the latter was being released. The incident, which occurred on Friday, July 11, was only discovered by prison authorities the following morning, marking what officials are calling one of the most serious security breaches in recent history.
The director of France’s prison administration, Sébastien Cauwel, confirmed to BFMTV that the prisoner “took advantage” of his cellmate’s scheduled release and concealed himself among the departing inmate’s belongings, effectively walking out of the prison undetected.
“This is an extremely rare event that we have never seen in this administration,” said Cauwel. “It clearly shows a whole series of serious failures — an accumulation of errors.”
The Corbas prison, located in the southeastern suburbs of Lyon, is currently facing severe overcrowding, operating at an alarming 170% occupancy rate, according to Cauwel. The Lyon Bar Association had already raised red flags about the facility’s conditions last month, citing overpopulation and strained staff resources.
The prison is designed to house 678 inmates, but as of May, more than 1,200 detainees were being held there, BFMTV reported. Cauwel emphasized that such extreme crowding “makes the working conditions of our officers more complicated” and contributes to lapses in security protocols.
The escapee, whose name has not been released publicly, is reportedly serving multiple sentences and is also under investigation in a separate case tied to organized crime, according to Agence France-Presse (AFP).
As a result, the Lyon public prosecutor’s office is now investigating the escape as part of a “criminal conspiracy” and potential “organized gang activity.”
Local authorities have launched a search operation to locate and apprehend the fugitive, who is now considered highly dangerous due to his alleged criminal connections.
This dramatic breakout is not without precedent in France. In May 2023, another high-profile escape occurred when Mohamed Amra, known by his nickname “The Fly,” was freed by armed men who ambushed a prison convoy en route to a facility in Normandy. He was eventually recaptured in Romania in February 2025, according to Reuters.
The latest escape raises urgent questions about France’s correctional system, particularly its ability to manage inmates with ties to criminal networks and the effectiveness of current security protocols.
