Harmanpreet Kaur Shines as Mumbai Indians Edge Past Gujarat Giants in WPL Thriller

Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur’s blazing half-century and Amelia Kerr’s all-round brilliance guide MI to a 9-run victory, securing their fifth win in WPL 2025.

Mumbai, March 11: Mumbai Indians (MI) registered a thrilling 9-run victory over Gujarat Giants (GG) in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 at the Brabourne Stadium on Monday, with Harmanpreet Kaur’s stellar half-century and Amelia Kerr’s all-round brilliance sealing the win.

With this win, MI climbed to second place in the points table, boosting their chances of a strong playoff push.

Harmanpreet’s Knock Sets the Stage for MI’s Strong Total

After Gujarat Giants won the toss and opted to bowl, Mumbai suffered an early setback as Amelia Kerr was run out for 5 by Ashleigh Gardner, leaving MI at 17/1. Hayley Matthews provided a quick-fire 27 before falling to Priya Mishra.

However, a 59-run stand between Nat Sciver-Brunt (38) and skipper Harmanpreet Kaur (54 off 33) brought stability to MI’s innings. Gardner broke the crucial partnership, dismissing Sciver-Brunt with a stunning caught-and-bowled effort.

Amanjot Kaur’s late fireworks (27 off 15 balls, including three boundaries and a six) propelled MI towards a competitive total of 179/6. Yastika Bhatia (13 off 4) and Sajeevan Sajana (11 off 6)* added the finishing touches.

For Gujarat Giants, Tanuja Kanwar, Kashvee Gautam, Priya Mishra, and Ashleigh Gardner picked up a wicket each.

Bharti Fulmali’s Heroics Almost Pull Off a Miracle for GG

Chasing 180, GG got off to a poor start, losing skipper Beth Mooney early for 7. The collapse continued as Kashvee Gautam and Ashleigh Gardner fell cheaply, reducing GG to 41/3.

Despite Harleen Deol’s attacking 24, Phoebe Litchfield (22) and Deandra Dottin (10) failed to convert their starts, pushing GG to the brink.

Just when MI seemed in control, Bharti Fulmali played a breathtaking knock of 61 off just 25 balls, almost pulling off an improbable win. However, Amelia Kerr struck at the right time, dismissing Fulmali and swinging the match back in MI’s favor.

With Simran Shaikh (18 off 16) and Tanuja Kanwar (10 off 6) fighting till the end, Gujarat remained in the contest, but MI bowlers held their nerve to restrict them to 170, sealing a narrow yet crucial victory.

Harmanpreet Leads from the Front, MI Bowlers Deliver Under Pressure

Matthews and Kerr were the standout bowlers for MI, picking up three wickets each and applying pressure at crucial junctures.

For her match-winning 54 off 33 balls, Harmanpreet Kaur was awarded the Player of the Match, leading MI to their fifth win in WPL 2025 as the playoffs approach.
