HIL Auction : Captain Harmanpreet Singh Becomes Most Expensive Player

October 13, 2024: Indian hockey captain Harmanpreet Singh expressed great enthusiasm after becoming the most expensive player in the ongoing Hockey India League (HIL) auction.

His services were secured by Soorma Hockey Club for an impressive Rs 78 lakh, marking his position as the highest-paid player in the league. Harmanpreet, known for his drag-flicking skills and ability to perform under pressure, has represented India in 234 international matches and scored 205 goals.

In a video shared by Hockey India, Harmanpreet celebrated his selection and the return of the HIL after a seven-year break, saying:

“Harmanpreet Singh this side. I am really excited because I have been picked by the Punjab team. Our team’s name is Soorma Hockey Club. Also more happier that HIL is coming back. It is a nice opportunity for our youngsters to showcase their talent and the future of hockey is brighter. Punjabi aagye oye!”

He emphasized the league’s importance for the development of young talent in Indian hockey, noting that it provides a platform for upcoming players to showcase their skills on a big stage. Harmanpreet’s energetic reaction, filled with Punjabi pride, reflects the enthusiasm surrounding HIL’s revival and its potential to elevate Indian hockey to greater heights.

Indian vice-captain Hardik Singh was also a major acquisition, signing with UP Rudras for Rs 70 lakh. Hardik, a key player in India’s Olympic bronze-winning team, has been instrumental in many of India’s victories, scoring 11 goals in 142 appearances.

The 2024-25 HIL will feature 8 men’s teams and 6 women’s teams, making history with the first standalone women’s league in India. Matches will be held in Ranchi, Jharkhand, and Rourkela, Odisha, with the men’s final scheduled for February 1, 2025, and the women’s final on January 26, 2025.
