Bhabesh Chandra, a prominent Hindu leader and vice-president of the Puja Udjapan Parishad in Dinajpur, was brutally murdered amid rising attacks on minorities in Bangladesh.
April 19, 2025: In a deeply troubling development in Bangladesh, Bhabesh Chandra, a respected Hindu community leader and Vice-President of the Biral unit of the Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad, was kidnapped and beaten to death in Dinajpur’s Biral upazila on Thursday.

According to reports in The Daily Star and confirmation from local police, four assailants on motorcycles abducted Chandra from his residence, later taking him to Narabari village, where they assaulted him brutally. The attackers returned him unconscious in a van. Despite being rushed to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital, he was declared dead upon arrival.

🔎 Growing Pattern of Targeted Attacks
The murder of Bhabesh Chandra comes amid a surge in violence against Hindu minorities in Bangladesh. A recent report by Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK) revealed:
- 147 incidents of vandalism against Hindu homes, temples, and shops in recent months
- 408 households vandalized, with 36 cases of arson
- 113 Hindu-owned businesses targeted
- 92 temple idols vandalized, including attacks on Ahmadiyya places of worship
Since the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus took office in August 2024, human rights groups have reported a drastic spike in gang rapes, murders, and temple desecrations targeting minority communities—primarily Hindus.
🇮🇳 India Raises Concerns
The Government of India has repeatedly expressed concern over minority safety in Bangladesh. In a recent meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bangladesh’s interim PM Muhammad Yunus during the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok, the issue of atrocities against Hindus was a focal point.
“We have conveyed our concerns regarding the treatment of minorities and the kind of violence that has happened against them. These atrocities cannot simply be dismissed as political noise,” said Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for India’s Ministry of External Affairs.
🛑 FIR and Investigation Underway
The Biral Police Station has confirmed that preparations are underway to register a formal case. Authorities say they are actively working to identify and apprehend the attackers.
The murder of Bhabesh Chandra has sparked fear and anger within the minority community, as the international community watches how the Yunus-led interim government responds to escalating communal violence.
