Canada PM to hold talks with Modi, focus on trade and strategic reset

February 26, 2026: Mark Carney will undertake his first official visit to India from February 27 to March 2, 2026, at the invitation of Narendra Modi. The visit, closely watched as a potential turning point in bilateral ties, will begin in Mumbai, where Carney is scheduled to engage with Indian and Canadian CEOs, industry leaders, financial experts, academicians and representatives of Canadian pension funds operating in India. The Mumbai leg is expected to focus on boosting trade flows, long-term investments and sectoral collaboration.

The visit will then move to New Delhi, where high-level diplomatic engagements are planned. On March 2, the two Prime Ministers will hold delegation-level talks at Hyderabad House to review progress under the India–Canada Strategic Partnership. Discussions are set to cover trade and investment, energy cooperation, critical minerals, agriculture, education, research and innovation, along with people-to-people ties. Both leaders will also exchange views on regional and global developments shaping their foreign policies.

Modi and Carney are expected to participate in the India–Canada CEO Forum, underscoring the economic thrust of the trip. The visit is widely seen as an effort to rebuild trust and restore momentum in relations that faced strain during the tenure of former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Carney’s outreach is being interpreted as a reset aimed at strengthening mutual confidence and expanding cooperation across strategic and economic domains.
