Kevin Pietersen Returns to Delhi Capitals as Team Mentor
New Delhi, February 28: In a major boost for Delhi Capitals (DC) ahead of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season, the franchise has announced the appointment of England cricketing icon Kevin Pietersen as their team mentor. The former England captain, known for his aggressive batting and tactical acumen, will work alongside a strong support staff, including Director of Cricket Venugopal Rao, Head Coach Hemang Badani, Assistant Coach Matthew Mott, and Bowling Coach Munaf Patel.
Expressing enthusiasm about the move, DC Chairman & Co-owner Kiran Kumar Grandhi stated:
“We are delighted to welcome KP as our team mentor. He has been a Delhi boy, having played for us in the IPL earlier, and it’s great to have him back in a different role. His experience, tactical understanding, and passion for the franchise will be invaluable.”
Echoing similar sentiments, Co-owner Parth Jindal emphasized Pietersen’s stature as a modern-day great:
“KP was arguably one of the best modern-day batters, and having him in our team is a valuable addition. We look forward to seeing him apply his knowledge and help our players drive towards our objectives.”
Marking his return to the Delhi franchise after more than a decade, Pietersen was visibly thrilled about stepping into a new role:
“I’ve got incredible memories of representing the Delhi franchise in the IPL, and I’ve been able to maintain that passion for the team even as a broadcaster over the years.”
“I’ve got a great relationship with the owners and the Delhi Capitals fans, so when this idea came about, it was a very quick YES from me. I’m really looking forward to joining the squad, working closely with the boys, and doing everything I can to help us win that ultimate prize.”
A veteran of 200 T20 matches, Pietersen scored 5,695 runs, including 1,001 IPL runs across his stints with Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals), Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Pune. His international achievements include:
🏏 104 Tests – 8,181 runs
🏏 136 ODIs – 4,440 runs
🏏 2010 ICC T20 World Cup Player of the Series, leading England to their maiden ICC trophy
Earlier this week, Delhi Capitals also announced the appointment of Matthew Mott as assistant coach. Mott, who guided England to the 2022 ICC T20 World Cup title, previously led Australia’s women’s team to two T20 World Cup wins, one ODI World Cup, and four Ashes series victories.
With Pietersen’s mentorship and a strong coaching lineup, Delhi Capitals are setting their sights on a dominant IPL campaign in 2025.
