Jos Buttler Praises Tilak Varma’s Heroics in England’s Narrow Loss

England captain applauds Tilak Varma’s match-winning knock, commends debutants for aggressive play in thrilling second T20I.

Chennai, January 26: England captain Jos Buttler lauded Tilak Varma for his masterclass under pressure, steering India to a thrilling two-wicket victory in the second T20I at MA Chidambaram Stadium. Despite England’s inspired performance, they now trail 2-0 in the five-match series.

Varma’s unbeaten 72-run knock proved to be the decisive factor as India successfully chased down 166 in a nail-biter. Buttler credited Varma for his calculated aggression, especially his 16th-over assault on Jofra Archer, which shifted momentum in India’s favor.

“Great game. Really exciting end. Credit to Tilak for getting them over the line,” said Buttler during the post-match presentation.

England’s Fightback: Carse and Smith Shine

Though England set a modest target of 166, debutants Jamie Smith and Brydon Carse brought their A-game to make it a contest to remember. Smith displayed the same aggressive flair that earned him accolades in Tests, while Carse delivered a fiery spell, unsettling India’s batting lineup.

Carse’s pace dismantled the likes of Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, and Washington Sundar, giving England a fighting chance. Buttler praised the debutants and the team’s overall approach, highlighting their determination despite falling short.

“We created a lot of chances and really pushed them close,” Buttler said. “Jamie Smith on debut, playing the way he did, and Brydon Carse creating chances with the ball—really pleased with the aggression we asked for.”

Tilak Varma’s Genius Stuns England

Tilak Varma’s composure under pressure and smart shot selection proved too much for England. The left-hander unleashed his repertoire of strokes, timing his attack perfectly to exploit the English bowlers. His assault on Archer in the 16th over was a turning point, showcasing his tactical brilliance.

Looking Ahead

Despite the loss, Buttler remains optimistic about England’s prospects in the series. “We will improve on it all, but happy with the style. They are going to play three spinners, so they are going to take wickets. If we take them for runs, I am happy,” he concluded.

India and England now head to the third T20I, with the visitors aiming to keep the series alive and the hosts looking to seal a commanding victory.
