Kamal Haasan Mourns Tragic Stampede at Vijay’s Karur Rally, 31 Dead and Dozens Injured

Actor-politician expresses shock and urges Tamil Nadu government to ensure proper relief and medical aid for victims

Chennai, September 28: A wave of grief and shock swept across Tamil Nadu after a tragic stampede at actor and TVK chief Vijay’s rally in Karur claimed 31 lives and left 58 others injured on Saturday. The tragedy has sparked widespread condolences, with actor-politician Kamal Haasan expressing deep sorrow over the incident.

Taking to social media platform X, Kamal Haasan wrote, “My heart trembles. The news coming from Karur brings shock and sorrow. I am at a loss for words to express my deepest condolences to the innocent people who lost their lives trapped in the crowd congestion.”

He further appealed to the Tamil Nadu government to extend all possible support to those affected, ensuring both proper medical treatment for the injured and relief measures for the victims’ families.

According to officials, the massive turnout at Vijay’s rally spiraled into chaos when overcrowding led to panic, resulting in a deadly stampede. Many attendees fainted and had to be rushed to nearby hospitals.

DMK leader and former Tamil Nadu Minister Senthil Balaji, who reached the Government Medical College and Hospital in Karur under Chief Minister MK Stalin’s directions, confirmed that immediate steps were being taken. “So far, 31 people have lost their lives, and 58 are injured. The Chief Minister has directed private hospitals not to charge the victims and to provide complete medical care. Tomorrow, CM Stalin himself will visit Karur to assess the situation and meet the affected families,” Balaji stated.

Tamil Nadu ADGP (Law and Order) Davidson Devarsirvatham also confirmed the scale of the tragedy, adding that the death toll could rise as investigations continue. Chief Minister Stalin has already convened an urgent meeting at the Secretariat, stressing swift action and support.

This heart-wrenching incident has cast a shadow on the political atmosphere of the state and raised pressing questions about safety and crowd management at large public gatherings.
