Landmark Total Knee Replacement Using Advanced Robotic and Custom Implants

Bengaluru, November 8, 2024: In a groundbreaking procedure, Narayana Health City successfully performed a Total Knee Replacement (TKR) on a patient with dwarfism who suffered from severe osteoarthritis and complex knee deformities. The pioneering surgery used advanced robotic-assisted technology and custom implants, offering an unprecedented level of precision and personalized care.

The patient, Raveendra Ittangudi from Kalaburagi, Karnataka, had previously undergone leg-lengthening surgery but continued to face debilitating knee issues due to his unique anatomy. His condition posed serious challenges, as standard knee implants proved incompatible with his bone structure, leading to limitations in mobility, severe pain, and atypical bone proportions.

Comprehensive diagnostic imaging, including X-rays, scanograms, and a CT scan, revealed that conventional implants were unsuitable for his atypical distal femur dimensions. A highly customized approach was necessary to fit his specific anatomy, as explained by Dr. Prashanth B N, Consultant Orthopaedics & Joint Replacement at Narayana Health City.

“Standard implants wouldn’t work due to the unique proportions of his bones,” said Dr. Prashanth. “With CT imaging and 3D modeling, we were able to design implants that precisely matched his bone structure, restoring natural knee movement and alignment essential for stability and joint function.”

Robotic Precision and Customized Implants Lead to Exceptional Outcome

This advanced robotic-assisted approach, combined with patient-specific implants, minimized risks associated with the patient’s complex anatomy and restored his knee function. Dr. Arun Ranganathan, Director and HOD of Orthopedics, Spine & Trauma, noted the hospital’s commitment to complex orthopedic care. “Our facilities, expert team, and advanced solutions allow us to tackle intricate cases like these successfully.”

Dr. Abhinandan S Punit, Consultant Orthopaedics & Joint Replacement, added, “Our team’s expertise and access to cutting-edge joint replacement technology ensure precise, successful outcomes, even for complex orthopedic conditions.”

A New Lease on Life for the Patient

For Raveendra Ittangudi, the surgery has transformed his life. “After years of severe leg pain and difficulty moving, I am finally able to walk without pain,” he expressed. “I am incredibly grateful to Dr. Prashanth BN and the team at Narayana Health City for their expertise and care in restoring my mobility and independence.”

This case underscores the vital role of patient-specific implants and advanced surgical techniques in treating orthopedic conditions in patients with challenging anatomies, marking a milestone in personalized orthopedic care.
