Michael Vaughan Criticizes Shubman Gill’s Inconsistency, Adam Gilchrist Praises His Style

Former cricketers dissect Gill’s poor Border-Gavaskar Trophy performance, highlighting elegance but inconsistency.

New Delhi, January 14: Former England captain Michael Vaughan and Australia’s legendary wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist shared their contrasting views on Indian batter Shubman Gill’s underwhelming performance during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, offering both criticism and humor on their Club Prairie Fire podcast.

Gill managed only 93 runs in five innings at a modest average of 18.60, a far cry from his stellar Test debut in the 2020-21 BGT series, where he scored 259 runs in three matches at an average of 51.80.

Vaughan: Gill Needs Consistency

Vaughan expressed frustration with Gill’s inability to convert starts into big scores, rating his series performance at just 4/10.

“He [Gill] frustrates me. He has got to get bigger scores. He is wonderful and elegant, but he needs to make those starts count,” Vaughan said.

Gilchrist’s Witty Praise

Gilchrist, while also giving Gill a 4/10, had a humorous take on the batter’s style.

“No player in world cricket has better hair when they take their helmet off. As soon as that helmet comes off… it’s perfect,” Gilchrist quipped.

Gill’s Struggles in SENA Conditions

Since his iconic 91-run knock in Brisbane during India’s historic chase in 2021, Gill has struggled in SENA conditions (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia), scoring just 255 runs in 15 innings at an average of 17.00, with a highest score of 36.

His away record stands at 649 runs in 24 innings at an average of 29.50, featuring only one century. In contrast, his home record is far stronger, with 1,177 runs in 31 innings, averaging 42.03, and includes four centuries.

Overall Career Numbers

In his 32-Test career, Gill has amassed 1,893 runs at an average of 35.05, with five centuries and seven fifties. Despite his undeniable talent, his inconsistency remains a concern for the Indian team.

Looking Ahead

Gill will look to address his shortcomings and deliver on his immense potential as India continues its busy international calendar.
