Tsunami fears linked to republished 1999 manga spark mass cancellations; Officials urge calm amid rising panic
June 18, 2025 –A chilling prediction by Japanese manga artist Ryo Tatsuki—often called the “New Baba Vanga”—has triggered widespread panic across Japan and parts of Asia. With just weeks left until the foretold date of July 5, fears of a massive tsunami or earthquake have led to an 83% plunge in flight bookings from Hong Kong to Japan and the suspension of routes to southern Japanese cities.

Tatsuki, whose earlier predictions have eerily come true—including the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and the Covid-19 pandemic—republished her 1999 manga “The Future I Saw” this year. In it, she warned:
“A great catastrophe will happen in Japan… A crack will open up under the seabed between Japan and the Philippines, sending ashore waves three times as tall as those from the Tohoku earthquake.”
Airlines Cancel Flights as Panic Rises
Responding to a sharp drop in demand, Hong Kong Airlines has suspended July and August flights to cities like Kagoshima and Kumamoto. Regional carriers report a 15–20% rise in cancellations, especially on Boeing-operated routes.
Greater Bay Airlines revealed that bookings for the spring cherry blossom and Easter holiday seasons were down by 50% from last year. “We expected around 80% of the seats to be taken, but actual reservations came to only 40%,” said Hiroki Ito, the airline’s Japan country head.
Bloomberg Intelligence confirmed a 50% drop in bookings between late June and early July, further amplifying economic worries for Japan’s tourism sector.

Officials Urge Public to Stay Calm
Despite the swirling rumors and viral panic, Japanese authorities are pushing back. Miyagi Prefecture Governor Yoshihiro Murai said:
“There is no reason to worry because the Japanese are not fleeing abroad. I hope people will ignore the rumours and visit.”
While Tatsuki’s previous predictions—ranging from the death of Princess Diana to Covid-19—have added to her mystique, officials and scientists stress there is no scientific basis for the July 5 forecast.
Tatsuki has also controversially claimed that a deadlier form of Covid will re-emerge in 2030.
With just over two weeks to go, Japan finds itself caught in a strange mix of superstition and science, with tourism, regional economies, and public perception all feeling the tremors of a prophecy that may never come true.
