Pakistan Defence Minister ridiculed after claiming drones were not shot down to protect military positions; relies on “Indian social media” to back claims of downing IAF jets.
May 9, 2025: Amid the ongoing military standoff between India and Pakistan, Pakistani Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif has sparked widespread criticism with his puzzling explanation for not intercepting Indian drones.
In a viral video shared across social media platforms, Asif claimed that Pakistan deliberately allowed Indian drones to fly unchallenged to avoid disclosing the locations of its military assets. “We didn’t intercept Indian drones because we didn’t want to reveal our locations,” he said, a statement that many have called both baffling and tactically flawed.

This comes just a day after Asif fumbled during a live interview with CNN, where he struggled to substantiate Pakistan’s assertion that it had shot down five Indian Air Force jets. When pressed for evidence, the minister cited “Indian social media” as proof. “The debris of these jets is all over Indian media,” he claimed, prompting the anchor to retort, “You’re the defence minister, sir… not here to talk about content on social media.”

The interview clip has since gone viral, attracting ridicule for Asif and raising questions about the credibility of Pakistan’s military claims.
India’s Counter-Offensive and Drone Neutralisation
Meanwhile, the Indian Army continues its strong countermeasures. During the night of May 8 and 9, Pakistan launched multiple drone attacks and ceasefire violations (CFVs) across the western border and the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir.
According to the Indian Army’s statement:
“Pakistan Armed Forces launched multiple attacks using drones and other munitions… The drone attacks were effectively repulsed and a befitting reply was given to the CFVs.”
Earlier on May 8, Indian forces reportedly shot down more than 50 Pakistani drones in a massive counter-drone operation along the LoC and international borders, according to ANI sources.
Rising Tensions and Escalation
The developments follow Operation Sindoor, India’s targeted strikes on terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians. Since then, Pakistan has attempted multiple retaliatory actions, all of which have been thwarted by Indian forces.
