De-Dollarisation Battle: Economist Warns Trump's Tariff Threats Could Backfire on US Economy
Detroit (Michigan) [US], November 7, 2024: With Republican Donald Trump’s victory in the US Presidential election confirmed, Indian-American US Congressman Shri Thanedar shared insights on why voters overwhelmingly supported Trump. According to Thanedar, many Americans view Trump as an “agent of change” who is aligned with their economic concerns and hardships.
“People feel that the current administration is responsible for the economic situation, and they have sent a clear message,” Thanedar stated. He noted that Trump’s campaign highlighted issues central to voters’ lives, demonstrating an understanding of their fears, challenges, and aspirations.
Reflecting on exit poll data, Thanedar pointed out that nearly 50% of voters are living “paycheck to paycheck” and facing rising costs in everyday expenses. “Many are struggling to pay for essentials like healthcare, groceries, gas, and education,” he added. “These are hardworking people, some without college degrees, who feel their buying power has declined while living costs have risen.” Thanedar emphasized that economic pressures are a key reason why this demographic gave Trump a clear mandate.
Meanwhile, Indian-American communities are celebrating Trump’s return to office, expressing optimism about positive impacts on the US economy, border security, and potential global stability. Avinash Gupta, President of the Foreign Indian Association, highlighted that many Indian-American voters were motivated by concerns over inflation, open borders, and global conflicts. Gupta also underscored Trump’s strong relationship with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which he believes will strengthen India-US relations.
Trump’s victory in crucial battleground states marks a remarkable comeback, securing him a second term in the White House after his loss to Joe Biden in 2020.
