Poland’s Deputy FM: PM Modi Helped Persuade Putin Against Nuclear Strikes

“India Played a Role in Preventing Nuclear War,” Says Wladyslaw Teofil Bartoszewski

Poland’s Deputy Foreign Minister credits PM Modi and China’s Xi Jinping for influencing Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision on nuclear weapons in Ukraine.

🔹 PM Modi’s Influence on Putin’s Nuclear Decision

Poland’s Deputy Foreign Minister and Secretary of State, Wladyslaw Teofil Bartoszewski, has revealed that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi played a key role in persuading Russian President Vladimir Putin not to use nuclear weapons against Ukraine.

Speaking to the media at the Raisina Dialogue in New Delhi, Bartoszewski said that Putin was initially unresponsive to Western warnings but was significantly influenced by phone calls from PM Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

“President Putin was threatening to use tactical nuclear weapons on the territory of Ukraine. The Americans sent several messages urging him not to consider it, but that didn’t necessarily persuade him at first,” Bartoszewski said.

“He received two phone calls—one from President Xi Jinping and one from PM Modi—telling him that neither China nor India independently approve of the war. When two major nations that Russia considers friendly said, ‘Don’t do it,’ Putin decided that using nuclear weapons was not a good idea. PM Narendra Modi played a role in this decision.”

🔹 Ukraine Acknowledges India’s Global Influence

Meanwhile, Ukrainian MP Sviatoslav Yurash acknowledged India’s growing role in shaping global geopolitics and emphasized that PM Modi’s recent remarks on war align with Ukraine’s perspective.

“India is shaping the 21st century. The podcast [with Lex Fridman] was about much more than Ukraine; it covered key issues for humanity’s future. However, when it comes to the stance that war is impermissible, Ukrainians strongly agree and desire nothing more than peace,” Yurash stated.

During his conversation with American researcher Lex Fridman, PM Modi highlighted India’s commitment to global peace and diplomatic solutions.

“We seek neither to wage war against nature nor to foster strife among nations. We stand for peace, and wherever we can act as peacemakers, we have gladly embraced that responsibility,” PM Modi said.

He also reiterated the importance of dialogue between both parties rather than external mediation.

“Ukraine may hold countless discussions with its allies, but those discussions will bear no fruit unless both parties are included,” Modi added.

🔹 PM Modi: “I Stand With Peace”

In a strong statement on India’s stance on global conflicts, PM Modi reaffirmed that his position is not of neutrality, but of active peacekeeping.

“As for me, I have always maintained that I stand with peace. I am not neutral. I have a stance, and that stance is peace, and peace is what I strive for.”
