New Delhi, November 21: Former India coach Ravi Shastri has identified Yashasvi Jaiswal and Jasprit Bumrah as India’s pivotal players for the highly anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) against Australia. With the first Test set to begin on Friday at Perth’s Optus Stadium, Shastri’s predictions add fuel to the excitement surrounding this storied rivalry.
Shastri believes Jaiswal’s recent form makes him a player to watch, particularly against Australia’s formidable bowling attack on the fast and bouncy Perth wicket. The young opener has been in scintillating touch, scoring consecutive double hundreds (209 and 214*) against England in Vizag and Rajkot, showcasing his hunger and ability to dominate.
“Jaiswal at the top can be devastating if he gets in,” Shastri said in an ICC Review. “He’s an entertainer with the ability to get big scores. You don’t hit two consecutive double hundreds without hunger, quality, and immense ability.”
Shastri also highlighted Jasprit Bumrah’s importance, calling him the “best fast bowler in the world.” Bumrah, who will lead India in Rohit Sharma’s absence, has been exceptional across formats in 2024 and has a stellar record in Australia, with 32 wickets in seven matches at an average of 21.25.
“He makes the ball talk,” Shastri said. “At this stage of his career, you’d expect him to be the highest wicket-taker and lead from the front.” Bowling coach Morne Morkel echoed Shastri’s sentiments, labeling Bumrah a “natural leader” who can deliver under pressure.
The first Test at Optus Stadium marks the beginning of a high-stakes series between the ICC World Test Championship’s top two teams. While India seeks redemption after a rare home series loss to New Zealand, Australia aims to break India’s streak of two consecutive Test series wins on Australian soil.
After the Perth Test (November 22-26), the second match, a day-night encounter, will be held at Adelaide Oval (December 6-10). Brisbane’s Gabba will host the third Test (December 14-18), followed by the iconic Boxing Day Test at Melbourne Cricket Ground (December 26-30). The series finale will take place at Sydney Cricket Ground (January 3-7).
Both teams have named strong squads, with India banking on a mix of youth and experience, and Australia relying on their seasoned campaigners.
