Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal Bolster Mumbai Squad for Ranji Clash Against J&K

Test captain Rohit Sharma and rising star Yashasvi Jaiswal return to Mumbai’s Ranji team as they aim to strengthen their lineup against Jammu & Kashmir.

Mumbai, January 21: India’s Test captain Rohit Sharma and promising opener Yashasvi Jaiswal have been named in Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy squad for their upcoming match against Jammu and Kashmir. The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) announced the inclusion through a statement from its senior selection committee.

The match is scheduled to take place from January 23 to 26 at the MCA Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy in Mumbai’s Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC).

Key Additions to Mumbai Squad

The inclusion of Rohit Sharma, who last played a Ranji Trophy game in November 2015, is a significant boost. Back then, he smashed a quick 113 off 140 balls against Uttar Pradesh in a match that ended in a draw.

Jaiswal, on the other hand, has been enjoying stellar form across formats, making his selection highly anticipated. Ajinkya Rahane will continue as the captain, while opener Angkrish Raghuvanshi makes way for Rohit, suggesting the seasoned player will open alongside Jaiswal.

Rohit Sharma’s Recent Struggles

Rohit’s recent Test performances have raised concerns. His 2024-25 Test season was particularly underwhelming, with only 164 runs in eight matches at an average of 10.93. This included a solitary half-century against Bangladesh. As captain, Rohit has faced challenges, including a historic 0-3 home series loss to New Zealand, India’s first Test series whitewash at home since 2000.

In contrast, Jaiswal has been on a hot streak. The young opener scored 1,771 international runs in 2024 at an average of 52.08, including three centuries and 11 half-centuries, establishing himself as one of India’s top performers.

Shreyas Iyer’s Stellar Form

Shreyas Iyer, another key player in Mumbai’s squad, has been exceptional, amassing 452 runs in four Ranji matches at an average of 90.40, including two centuries.

Mumbai Squad for the Match

The 17-member Mumbai squad, led by Ajinkya Rahane, also includes seasoned players like Shreyas Iyer, Shivam Dube, and Shardul Thakur.

Mumbai Squad:

  • Ajinkya Rahane (Captain)
  • Rohit Sharma
  • Yashasvi Jaiswal
