Team India’s T20 World Cup-winning skipper Rohit Sharma celebrated his team’s triumph by breaking into a dance after receiving a warm welcome from fans at Delhi airport on Thursday.
The ICC T20 World Cup-winning Indian team touched down in Delhi to a hero’s welcome from fans eager to see their favorite players and the coveted silverware.
The squad members, support staff, and their families were previously stuck in Barbados due to Hurricane Beryl, which had caused the closure of Grantley Adams International Airport for three days. The flight, organized by BCCI secretary Jay Shah, departed on July 2 and arrived in Delhi at around 6:00 AM on Thursday morning. Board officials and media members from the tournament were also on the flight.
India ended a 13-year ICC trophy drought with a seven-run victory over South Africa in the final on Saturday. Virat Kohli’s 76 helped India reach 176/7, while Hardik Pandya (3/20) and Jasprit Bumrah (2/18) restricted South Africa to 169/8, despite Heinrich Klaasen’s 52 off 27 balls. Bumrah, who took 15 wickets throughout the tournament with a stunning economy rate of 4.17, was named ‘Player of the Tournament.’
From the airport, Team India proceeded to the ITC Maurya hotel, where they would stay before meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, head coach Rahul Dravid, and BCCI president Roger Binny were among those spotted at the hotel.
Upon arrival, Rohit Sharma delighted fans by dancing to the beat of a dhol, with hundreds of excited supporters cheering him on.
To celebrate their victory, the Rohit-led team will have an open-top bus ride in Mumbai at Marine Drive and the iconic Wankhede Stadium from 5:00 pm onwards. After their meeting with PM Modi, the Men in Blue will head to Mumbai for the grand celebratory parade.
