Rohit Sharma Praises Sri Lanka After ODI Series Loss

India captain Rohit Sharma firmly dismissed any notions of complacency from his team following their unexpected defeat in the ODI series against Sri Lanka. Speaking after the series concluded in Colombo, Rohit acknowledged Sri Lanka’s exceptional performances which led to their historic series win.

Despite India’s strong showing in the T20I series against Sri Lanka, where they achieved a clean sweep, the shift to the ODI format saw a dramatic turnaround. Sri Lanka’s spinners dominated throughout the three-match series, exploiting the favorable conditions in Colombo to their advantage.

Series Overview

  • First ODI: Sri Lanka narrowly missed defeating India.
  • Second ODI: India was convincingly outplayed.
  • Third ODI: India was never in a winning position, eventually succumbing to Sri Lanka’s spin attack.

Rohit Sharma praised the hosts, saying, “We have to give credit where credit is due. Sri Lanka played better than us.” He emphasized that India took the necessary precautions and adapted their strategy to the conditions but were ultimately outperformed by the Sri Lankan team.

Reflecting on the Series

Rohit highlighted that facing high-quality spin on turning tracks posed significant challenges for the Indian batsmen. “I don’t think it’s a concern, but it’s something we need to look at seriously, our individual game plans,” Rohit noted, stressing the need for introspection and improvement.

He pointed out that the team needed to focus on areas of improvement rather than just the positives. “We lost the series, and I feel there are a lot of areas we need to look at rather than the positives,” he added. Rohit reaffirmed his confidence in the team’s abilities, mentioning their consistent performance over the years despite the occasional series loss.

Third ODI Recap

  • Sri Lanka Innings: Avishka Fernando’s 96, Kusal Mendis’s 59, and Pathum Nissanka’s 45 guided Sri Lanka to a total of 248/7.
  • India’s Response: India struggled against the spinners and were bowled out for 138, losing the match by 110 runs.

Sri Lanka’s series win marked their first bilateral series victory against India since 1997, a testament to their effective utilization of home conditions and strategic gameplay.
