Dubai [UAE], November 5, 2024: Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has introduced a six-month pilot program for a new taxi-sharing service, connecting Ibn Battuta Centre in Dubai with Al Wahda Centre in Abu Dhabi. This service aims to provide travelers with a fast, affordable, and sustainable transport option between the two major hubs.
“Ibn Battuta Centre in Dubai and Al Wahda Centre in Abu Dhabi were selected after a thorough analysis of potential routes for the shared taxi service between the two emirates,” explained Adel Shakri, Director of Planning and Business Development at RTA’s Public Transport Agency. “This initiative aims to reduce travel costs, particularly for frequent commuters between Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Furthermore, both locations are well-connected to public transportation hubs and parking facilities.”
The taxi-sharing program allows up to four passengers per taxi, with costs decreasing significantly as more passengers share the ride. For instance, with four passengers, the cost is just AED 66 each—representing a 75% savings compared to hiring a taxi solo for the trip between Dubai and Abu Dhabi. When two passengers share, each pays AED 132, and for three passengers, the fare is AED 88 each. Payments can be made conveniently via bank cards or nol cards.
The RTA’s initiative also aims to reduce traffic congestion, promote environmental sustainability by reducing carbon emissions, and discourage unlicensed transport services. RTA’s taxis are equipped with advanced safety features, including cameras linked to the Operations Control Centre and monitoring systems for driver performance, ensuring a smooth and safe journey for all passengers.
If successful, the RTA may consider expanding the shared taxi service to other routes and locations across the UAE after the pilot period ends.
