Russian Foreign Ministry Trolls Macron Over Slapgate Viral Video, Jokes About “Hand of Kremlin”

Maria Zakharova teases French President’s viral clip with wife in Hanoi, adding Kremlin humor to fuel online speculation

May 27, 2025: Moscow:
Russia’s foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova on Monday mocked a viral video of French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte arriving in Hanoi, Vietnam. In the video, which has circulated widely on social media, Macron appears to lean away from his wife’s hand, leading to speculation and rumors about a possible spat between the couple.

Zakharova took to Telegram, writing, “A right hook from his wife? Did the first lady decide to cheer up her husband with a gentle pat on the cheek and miscalculated her strength? Or was it a case of fixing his collar and accidentally hitting his beloved face?”

Adding fuel to the humor, she quipped, “Here’s a hint: maybe it was the ‘hand of the Kremlin’?”

Macron dismissed any suggestion of a “domestic dispute,” clarifying that they were “joking as we often do” and noting that other similar videos had also been misinterpreted, including claims of him sharing cocaine or confronting Turkish President Erdogan. “None of these are true,” Macron said, urging everyone to “calm down.”

Russian state TV has played the clip repeatedly, and it has been widely shared by accounts critical of Macron. The clip’s viral spread follows other incidents where Zakharova and American conspiracy theorist Alex Jones previously accused Macron and other European leaders of drug use, based on a mistaken low-quality video that turned out to show a crumpled tissue, not drugs.

While these claims were debunked, they did prompt responses from the Elysee Palace and French foreign ministry.
