Shikhar Dhawan Reflects on Early Struggles and Inspires Budding Cricketers

Former Indian opener shares his journey from humble beginnings to cricket stardom during an event for underprivileged kids organized by the Shikhar Dhawan Foundation.

New Delhi, January 15: Former India opener Shikhar Dhawan recently opened up about the challenges he faced during his early cricketing days while interacting with young cricketers from various NGOs. The event, organized by the Shikhar Dhawan Foundation, provided underprivileged children a chance to hear the inspiring story of one of India’s most celebrated cricketers.

Recalling his initial struggles, Dhawan said, “I started playing at a young age for a club, practiced for a year, and got to play a tournament after a year.” He described how he would take on tasks such as rolling pitches, fetching tea for coaches, and spending long hours in the sun, all for the chance to bat for just 10 minutes at the end of the day.

These sacrifices, Dhawan emphasized, were pivotal in shaping his career, teaching him discipline and perseverance. The 38-year-old cricketer’s journey from those humble beginnings to becoming an internationally renowned sportsman is a testament to his dedication and hard work.

During the event held last December, Dhawan interacted with children, shared gifts, and engaged in a question-and-answer session, offering both inspiration and practical advice. The Shikhar Dhawan Foundation focuses on improving the lives of underprivileged children, combining material aid with emotional and motivational support.

Dhawan’s Cricketing Legacy

Shikhar Dhawan recently announced his retirement from international cricket, marking the end of a stellar career. In ODIs, where he truly excelled, Dhawan played 167 matches, amassing 6,793 runs at an average of 44.1, including 17 centuries and 39 half-centuries.

In Test cricket, he partnered memorably with Murali Vijay, scoring 2,315 runs in 34 matches at an average of 40.6, with seven tons and five half-centuries. Dhawan’s T20I career saw him make 68 appearances and score 1,759 runs, including 11 fifties.

At the domestic level, Dhawan’s prowess was equally remarkable. In 122 First-Class matches, he scored 8,499 runs at an average of 44.26, including 25 centuries and 29 fifties.
