June 7, 2025: A video showing hundreds of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) fans leaping over metro station gates and bypassing the mandatory QR code or token entry system on June 4 — the day of the tragic Bengaluru stampede — has surfaced online, sparking widespread outrage.

The footage, confirmed by Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), was recorded at the Majestic interchange during the RCB felicitation event. It shows crowds jumping over automated fare gates to enter or exit the metro platforms without paying the fare. This mass fare evasion was partly driven by overcrowding and the cancellation of trains for nearly two hours, which left commuters trapped on the platforms.

BMRCL recorded an unprecedented 9,66,732 metro commuters on that day, leading to extreme congestion. To manage the rush, some trains temporarily bypassed certain stations, worsening the crowd control situation.

The viral video triggered strong reactions on social media, with many criticizing RCB fans for their lack of civic sense and disregard for public safety. Others attempted to contextualize the chaos, pointing out that the crowd was stuck on platforms with no way out due to the halted train services.

Tragically, the overwhelming crowd at the venue resulted in a stampede outside the Bengaluru stadium, causing 11 deaths and injuring nearly 50 people.

In response to the incident, Bengaluru Police have filed an FIR against the RCB franchise, event organizer DNA Entertainment Pvt. Ltd., and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA). The charges include culpable homicide and unlawful assembly, as investigations continue into the causes and management failures that led to the disaster.
