Shubman Gill’s Historic Double Century Powers India to Dominance in Edgbaston Test

Today’s Test Highlights: Shubman Gill smashes 265 in a record-breaking innings as India sets massive 587-run lead and pacers rattle England early at Edgbaston.

Today’s Test highlight belonged undeniably to Shubman Gill, whose sensational double century (265) rewrote record books and put India firmly in control on Day 2 of the second Test against England at Edgbaston. Gill’s innings, marked by poise and audacity, combined with incisive spells from Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj, left England reeling at 77/3 in response to India’s imposing first-innings total of 587.

Birmingham [UK], July 4 – Team India stamped its authority on Day 2 of the second Test at Edgbaston with a commanding display, driven by skipper Shubman Gill’s majestic double century and backed by early breakthroughs from the Indian pace battery.

At stumps, England struggled at 77/3, still trailing by 510 runs. Joe Root (18*) and Harry Brook (30*) remained unbeaten, tasked with resurrecting England’s hopes after a fiery Indian bowling display dismantled the top order.

England’s innings began with intent, Zak Crawley hitting two boundaries in the opening over. But debutant Akash Deep struck gold in his third over, dismissing Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope on consecutive deliveries, both for ducks. Crawley followed soon after, edging one from Siraj to Karun Nair at slips, and England slumped to 25/3. Root and Brook then steadied the innings with an unbeaten 52-run stand.

Gill’s Day of Glory

The day, however, belonged to Shubman Gill.

India resumed at 310/5 with Gill unbeaten on 114. Alongside Ravindra Jadeja, he frustrated England’s bowlers with precision and flair. Jadeja brought up his fifty off 80 balls, while Gill crossed the 150-run mark in 263 deliveries. Their 150-run stand highlighted India’s dominance until Jadeja fell to Josh Tongue for 89.

Washington Sundar joined Gill next, playing a solid supporting role. Gill continued to dazzle, reaching his maiden Test double century with a single off Josh Tongue. With this, he became the third Indian to score a double century in England, following legends Sunil Gavaskar and Rahul Dravid.

Post-200, Gill shifted gears, unleashing a flurry of boundaries — including reverse sweeps and straight drives — and eventually surpassed Gavaskar’s record for the highest individual score by an Indian in England. He reached 250 with a crisp boundary off Harry Brook, ending with a spectacular 265 off 348 balls, including 29 fours and three sixes.

Gill’s partnership with Sundar added 144 runs before the latter was bowled by Joe Root for 42. India declared at 587, their third-highest total in England, with Akash Deep unbeaten on 0 alongside Gill.

Bowling Brilliance

India’s pacers backed up the batters with early inroads. Akash Deep removed Duckett and Pope for ducks, and Siraj dismissed Crawley for 19. With England at 25/3, their famed batting depth was tested. Root and Brook stabilized the innings, but with a mountain to climb, the pressure remains firmly on England.

Records Broken by Shubman Gill:

  • Highest Test score by an Indian in England (265)
  • First Indian captain to score a double century in England since Rahul Dravid
  • Third Indian ever with a Test double ton in England
  • Second-highest score by a visiting captain in Edgbaston

Day’s Brief Summary:

  • India: 587 all out
(Shubman Gill 265, Ravindra Jadeja 89, Shoaib Bashir 3/167)
  • England: 77/3
(Harry Brook 30, Joe Root 18*, Akash Deep 2/36)*

Today’s Test spotlight clearly belonged to Shubman Gill’s record-shattering knock that not only defined the day but also gave India a psychological and statistical edge. With England staring down a massive deficit and early wickets already lost, Day 3 promises further action as India looks to tighten the grip and possibly enforce a follow-on.
