Trudeau Faces Internal Pressure to Step Down Amid Party Tensions

Ottawa [Canada], October 25, 2025: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has declared he will lead the Liberal Party into the next election, despite internal calls for his resignation. Speaking to reporters, Trudeau said, “We’re going to continue to have great conversations about what is the best way to take on Pierre Poilievre in the next election. But that will happen with me as leader.”

His statement comes after two dozen Liberal MPs signed an internal document urging him to step down, reflecting growing discontent following recent by-election losses. Some MPs, like Sean Casey, expressed disappointment over Trudeau’s decision, labeling it as a missed opportunity for reflection. He remarked, “I don’t think that he felt that he needed to reflect, consolidate. His mind was made up.”

This internal pressure has also been fueled by Canada’s diplomatic tensions with India, especially after Trudeau’s allegations regarding India’s involvement in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a designated Khalistani terrorist. India has dismissed the claims as “politically motivated,” deepening the rift between the two nations.

Despite the controversy, Trudeau remains resolute. When asked directly if he plans to step down by the October 28 deadline set by some MPs, he responded simply, “Yes.” Several Liberal MPs continue to express their concerns over the party’s future, but the Prime Minister has emphasized the need for party unity and moving forward.
