Trump Approved Iran Strike Plans but Withheld Final Order Amid Ongoing Conflict-Report

US President told aides he signed off on Iran attack plans but paused for Tehran’s nuclear reversal; Israel intensifies strikes on Iranian targets

June 19, 2025 | Washington
As the Israel-Iran conflict entered its seventh day, U.S. President Donald Trump has reportedly approved military strike plans on Iran but is withholding the final go-ahead, according to The Wall Street Journal. The report suggests Trump wants to give Tehran one final opportunity to step back from its nuclear ambitions.

When questioned outside the White House, Trump was cryptic:

“I may do it. I may not do it. I mean, nobody knows what I’m going to do.”

Later, he added that Iranian officials had expressed interest in talks in Washington but suggested the moment for diplomacy might have passed.

Israel Intensifies Strikes, Civilian Deaths Mount

The Israeli military confirmed multiple airstrikes on Iranian nuclear and missile infrastructure, including Iran’s police headquarters and military production sites. Sirens blared across northern Israel and the Jordan Valley as drones launched from Iran were intercepted.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated in a video message:

“We are hitting the nuclear sites, the missiles, the headquarters, the symbols of the regime.”

Netanyahu also thanked Trump for his support, calling him “a great friend of the state of Israel.”

Tehran Residents Flee, Civilians Killed

Inside Iran, fear and panic are spreading. Highways out of Tehran were jammed with people fleeing the capital. A 31-year-old resident said:

“My friend’s house was attacked, her brother injured. We’re civilians—why must we pay for the regime’s choices?”

Iran has reported at least 224 deaths, mostly civilians. Israeli officials say 24 people have died in Israel—all civilians—after 400 Iranian missiles, 40 of which pierced air defenses, were launched since Friday.

Trump Weighs Military Options, Mulls Khamenei Assassination

Sources say Trump’s team is actively considering options ranging from targeted strikes on Iran’s Fordow nuclear site to full-scale involvement in Israel’s military operations.

In a social media post earlier this week, Trump mused about assassinating Ayatollah Khamenei. The Iranian leader responded with a televised message:

“Any U.S. military intervention will undoubtedly be accompanied by irreparable damage. The Iranian nation will not surrender.”

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin declined to entertain questions about possible U.S.-Israeli involvement in targeting Iran’s supreme leader:

“I do not even want to discuss this possibility.”

Global Stakes: Strait of Hormuz and Oil Fears

Iran has hinted at disrupting global oil supply, particularly at the Strait of Hormuz, which handles nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil shipments. While full details are scarce, the Iranian government has tightened media control, banned public filming, and restricted internet access, citing national security.

Meanwhile, France, Germany, and Britain are pushing for last-ditch nuclear diplomacy talks in Geneva with Iranian officials, urging Iran to reaffirm that its nuclear program is strictly civilian.

Conclusion

With diplomatic channels narrowing and military operations escalating, the Middle East teeters on the brink of broader war. Whether Trump will commit U.S. forces to the battlefield or keep Iran guessing remains uncertain—but the window for de-escalation is rapidly closing.
