Trump Hopes for Russia-Ukraine Peace Deal This Week, Suggests U.S. Business Could Follow
Former U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday expressed renewed optimism that Russia and Ukraine could finalize a peace agreement this week to end their long-running conflict. Taking to Truth Social, Trump suggested that once peace is achieved, both nations would have an opportunity to engage in significant business with the United States, which he described as “thriving.”
“Hopefully Russia and Ukraine will make a deal this week. Both will then start to do big business with the United States of America, which is thriving, and make a fortune,” Trump posted.
According to a CNN report on Friday, a proposed peace framework is under discussion, with key components including:
The draft proposal was reportedly shared with Ukrainian and European officials during talks in Paris last week. Additional negotiations are expected to continue in London in the coming days, as certain elements of the agreement remain unresolved.
One of the most contentious aspects of the proposal is the possible U.S. acceptance of Russia’s annexation of Crimea, which occurred in 2014 and was widely condemned as a violation of international law.
The suggestion has sparked debate among Western allies, with concerns that such a move could undermine Ukraine’s sovereignty and embolden Russian territorial claims.
While optimistic, Trump also warned that if either side becomes overly rigid during negotiations, the U.S. may back off its mediation role.
“If, for some reason, one of the two parties makes it very difficult, we’re just going to say, ‘You’re foolish, you’re horrible people,’ and we’re just going to take a pass,” he told CNN.
Still, Trump appeared hopeful that a resolution is within reach:
“I think we have a really good chance of getting it done. It’s coming to a head right now,” he said.
The Russia-Ukraine war, ongoing since 2022, has led to widespread humanitarian suffering, economic instability, and global geopolitical tensions. While previous peace efforts have faltered, renewed diplomatic activity has raised cautious hopes for a breakthrough—particularly if major powers like the U.S. and EU apply coordinated pressure.
