"Trump's Immigration Crackdown: 20,000 Arrests in First Month"
Washington DC [US], February 27: The Trump administration has ramped up its immigration crackdown, with over 20,000 undocumented immigrants arrested in the first month of Donald Trump’s presidency, according to data from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), CNN reported.
This surge in deportation arrests marks a significant shift in immigration policy, as the administration aggressively pursues undocumented individuals across the country.
“President Trump and this Administration are saving lives every day because of the actions we are taking to secure the border and deport illegal alien criminals,” DHS Secretary Kristi Noem stated. “Hundreds of thousands of criminals were let into this country illegally. We are sending them home, and they will never be allowed to return.”
The pace of arrests under Trump has already outstripped the Biden administration’s numbers. In the last fiscal year under Biden, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) conducted around 33,000 at-large arrests, CNN reported.
However, Trump’s aggressive policies have led to an increase in enforcement actions, surpassing Biden’s yearly total in just a few weeks.
“We took over a mess,” Trump said during his first Cabinet meeting. “We set records on the least number of illegal aliens and migrants coming into our country that we’ve had in more than 50 years, and we did this all within weeks.”
Despite the surge in arrests, Trump administration officials have expressed dissatisfaction with the overall pace of deportations. This frustration led to the removal of Acting ICE Director Caleb Vitello on February 22.
“The Acting Director of ICE is not being fired—he is no longer in an administrative role but is overseeing all field and enforcement operations,” said Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin.
Vitello, a career government official, is expected to be reassigned following internal disagreements over the execution of Trump’s immigration policies.
During his remarks, Trump emphasized his commitment to legal immigration, stating that while the administration welcomes immigrants, they must enter the country through legal channels.
“The world was pouring in from jails, prisons, and mental institutions. We had gang members, drug dealers—anyone who wanted to come in, they could,” Trump said. “We want people to come into our country, but they have to come in legally.”
His administration has focused on strict border control, with increased ICE raids and deportations forming the core of his immigration policy.
With ICE stepping up operations, the Trump administration appears poised to continue its hardline stance on immigration, with additional enforcement actions expected in the coming months.
As deportation numbers climb, the political and legal battles over immigration are likely to intensify, shaping the national debate ahead of the next election cycle.
