"UK Stands with India": Rishi Sunak Condemns Pahalgam Terror Attack, Backs Global Solidarity Against Terrorism
Former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak mourns loss of lives in Pahalgam, calls the attack “barbaric” and affirms UK’s unwavering support to India in its fight against terror
London/New Delhi, April 24: Former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has strongly condemned the terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, which claimed the lives of 26 innocent people, including families and newlyweds. Calling the act “barbaric,” Sunak offered heartfelt condolences and expressed solidarity with India, asserting that “terror will never win.”
“The barbaric attack in Pahalgam has stolen the lives of newlyweds, children, and families simply seeking joy. Our hearts break for them. To those mourning – know that the UK stands with you in sorrow and solidarity. Terror will never win. We grieve with India,” — Rishi Sunak posted on X (formerly Twitter)
The attack, carried out by terrorists at Baisaran Meadow in Pahalgam on April 22, turned a serene tourist destination into a site of bloodshed. In its aftermath, the Indian Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, convened an emergency meeting to assess the national security situation.
🔴 India’s Tough Diplomatic and Strategic Response:
In view of the attack and its cross-border implications, India has adopted a series of hardline countermeasures:
Expulsion of Pakistani Military Advisors: Declared Persona Non Grata, with one week to leave.
Closure of Attari Integrated Check Post: With immediate effect. Those with valid entries must return before May 1, 2025.
Suspension of Indus Waters Treaty: Held in abeyance until Pakistan irrevocably halts support for cross-border terror.
SAARC Visa Ban for Pakistani Nationals: Existing SVES visas cancelled, and current holders must leave within 48 hours.
Diplomatic Downsizing: Both High Commissions (India & Pakistan) will reduce staff strength to 30, down from 55, by May 1.
🌍 Global Condemnation and Support:
India’s firm stance has drawn strong international backing, with world leaders and global institutions condemning the attack and offering solidarity. The UK’s message, as articulated by Rishi Sunak, reflects the growing global consensus against terrorism in all forms.
The CCS noted that the attack came amid peaceful elections and economic progress in Jammu and Kashmir, and is seen as an attempt to derail stability in the region.
Conclusion: The Pahalgam terror attack has galvanized international unity in support of India, with leaders like Rishi Sunak reaffirming the global resolve against terrorism. As India accelerates its countermeasures, the diplomatic fallout has taken center stage—underscoring New Delhi’s zero-tolerance approach to terror and its cross-border enablers.
