UP: Two Women Leave Abusive Marriages to Marry Each Other

Fed up with domestic violence and alcoholism, the two women find solace in each other, tying the knot at a Shiva temple in Deoria.

January 25, 2025: In a remarkable act of defiance against societal norms and personal adversity, two women in Uttar Pradesh’s Deoria district left their abusive husbands and married each other. Kavita and Gunja, who also goes by Bablu, solemnized their union on Thursday evening at the Shiva Temple, commonly referred to as Choti Kashi.

At the temple ceremony, Gunja took on the role of the groom, applying sindoor (vermillion) to Kavita, exchanging garlands, and performing the traditional seven pheras.

“We were tormented by our husbands’ drinking and abusive behavior. This pushed us to choose a life of peace and love. We have decided to live in Gorakhpur as a couple and work to sustain ourselves,” Gunja shared with reporters.

The couple now plans to rent a room and begin their journey as life partners.

Temple priest Uma Shankar Pandey, who witnessed the event, mentioned, “They performed the rituals, purchased garlands and sindoor, and left quietly after completing the ceremony.”

Their story serves as an inspiring narrative of choosing self-respect and love over societal constraints.
