US Pauses Student Visa Interviews: How Indian Applicants Will Be Hit

Trump administration’s move to step up social media vetting delays interviews for thousands of Indian students – now the largest group in US higher education.

May 29, 2025: India has now surpassed China as the largest source of international students in the United States, making the Trump administration’s sudden halt on student visa interviews a significant blow to Indian applicants.

On Tuesday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio ordered US embassies and consulates worldwide to pause new interviews for student-visa applicants. The reason? The administration is ramping up vetting of social media profiles, leading to longer wait times and uncertain processing.

Why The Pause?
This decision comes as Trump intensifies scrutiny of student activism, labeling protests on US campuses—particularly around the Gaza conflict—as “anti-Semitic” and cracking down on what he terms “divisive” diversity initiatives in universities.
The pause, with no deadline set, could last months, delaying Indian students’ dreams of studying in America. Existing interview backlogs and more comprehensive background checks mean a longer wait for all.

Indian Students in the US
The Open Doors Report says that in 2023-24, India accounted for over 3.3 lakh (331,602) of the 1.1 million international students in the US—almost 30%. This was a 23.3% rise from the previous year.
Most of these students pursued graduate degrees (nearly 2 lakh), with a significant focus on Math, Computer Science (42.9%), Engineering (24.5%), and Business (11.2%). Around 1 lakh Indian students participated in Optional Practical Training (OPT) programs.

Trump’s Directive & Official Stance
Rubio’s order, circulated globally to US embassies, reads: “Effective immediately… consular sections should not add any additional student or exchange visitor (F, M and J) visa appointment capacity until further guidance is issued.”

State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce reinforced the administration’s hardline stance: “We’re going to continue to vet everyone… to ensure that those who come here respect the law and will contribute positively, whether their stay is short or long.”

What This Means For Indian Students
With India’s student population in the US growing steadily and now the largest in the world, this visa pause will delay travel plans for thousands. It will also add stress and uncertainty for students awaiting final approvals for Fall 2025 admissions.

While universities and applicants brace for longer delays, no one can say how soon visa interviews will resume. But as of now, the process has come to an indefinite halt.
