Following India’s precision strikes on terror bases in Pakistan, Rubio calls for calm and continued diplomatic engagement between New Delhi and Islamabad.
May 7, 2025: Washington, DC – Reacting to India’s major counterterror operation against Pakistan-based militant camps, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Wednesday that he is closely monitoring the India-Pakistan situation and urged both sides to move toward a peaceful resolution.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Rubio stated:
“I am monitoring the situation between India and Pakistan closely. I echo @POTUS’s comments earlier today that this hopefully ends quickly and will continue to engage both Indian and Pakistani leadership towards a peaceful resolution.”
His remarks came hours after India launched Operation Sindoor, a tri-services strike on nine terror infrastructure sites in Pakistan and PoK, including a major base in Bahawalpur linked to Jaish-e-Mohammed, the group believed to be behind the April 22 Pahalgam attack.

NSA Ajit Doval Briefs US Counterpart
According to the Indian Embassy in Washington, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval spoke with Rubio shortly after the strikes to brief him on the nature, targets, and justification of the operation.
A statement issued by the embassy clarified that:
“India’s actions have been focused and precise. They were measured, responsible, and designed to be non-escalatory in nature. No Pakistani civilian, economic, or military targets were hit. Only known terror camps were targeted.”
Pahalgam Attack: The Trigger
On April 22, 26 civilians, including tourists and a Nepali citizen, were gunned down in a terror attack at Baisaran in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir. India claims to have “credible leads, technical inputs, survivor testimony, and other evidence” pointing to Pakistan-based terror outfits.
“Instead of acting against terrorists, Pakistan spent the last two weeks in denial and issued false flag allegations against India,” the embassy added.
India’s diplomatic offensive has included suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, revoking visas, and downgrading diplomatic ties, while Pakistan has since closed airspace to Indian carriers and suspended several bilateral arrangements.
As regional tensions rise, international players like the US are treading cautiously, hoping that both nuclear-armed neighbors exercise restraint even as India signals more action if provoked further.
