Vinesh Phogat Appeals Disqualification at Paris Olympics to CAS
Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has taken her case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) following her disqualification from the 50 kg freestyle category final at the Paris Olympics. Phogat, who was slated to compete for the gold medal against the United States’ Sarah Ann Hildebrandt, was disqualified for exceeding the weight limit by 2.7 kg.
The disqualification occurred on Wednesday, with Dinshaw Pardiwala, Chief Medical Officer of the Indian Olympic contingent, revealing that Phogat was found to be over the weight limit after her semi-final bout. Despite efforts to reduce her weight by limiting food and water intake, Phogat was unable to meet the required weight.
Following her disqualification, Phogat has appealed to the CAS, seeking to be awarded the silver medal. The CAS is expected to deliver its verdict on the matter on Thursday morning. According to a source from the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), “Vinesh Phogat has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against her disqualification, asking for the silver medal. CAS will give its verdict tomorrow morning.”
The decision from CAS will be closely watched as it holds significant implications for Phogat’s Olympic journey and her standing in the wrestling community. The Indian contingent and Phogat’s supporters are hopeful for a favorable outcome that would allow her to be recognized for her efforts and achievements despite the setback.
As the wrestling community awaits the CAS verdict, Vinesh Phogat’s appeal underscores the high stakes and intense scrutiny faced by athletes at the Olympic level. The outcome will determine not only Phogat’s medal status but also set a precedent for future cases of weight-related disqualifications.
