German star acknowledges Italian champion’s dominance, vows to keep striving for his maiden Grand Slam title.

Melbourne [Australia], January 27: After his defeat in the Australian Open 2025 final, German tennis star Alexander Zverev praised Jannik Sinner, comparing the Italian sensation to tennis legend Novak Djokovic. Despite the loss, Zverev expressed optimism about eventually winning a Grand Slam title, citing Sinner’s encouraging words.

Sinner claimed his second consecutive Australian Open title and third Grand Slam overall, outclassing Zverev 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-3 in a two-hour, 42-minute showdown. The 23-year-old Italian displayed exceptional composure, never facing a break point and extending his unbeaten streak at hard-court Grand Slams to 21 matches.

Zverev Reflects on the Match

Zverev, still chasing his maiden Grand Slam, admitted being “quite down and emotional” after falling short in his third Grand Slam final. The world number two said he had high hopes for the final but was outplayed by Sinner’s all-around dominance.

“I really thought I had a very good chance today,” Zverev said. “But seeing someone else lift the trophy for the third time while I stand next to them is difficult. There is nothing more I want than to hold one of those trophies.”

Zverev revealed that Sinner, who now joins an elite group of players to win three consecutive Grand Slams, assured him he would eventually secure a major title. “He said I would definitely lift one of those trophies in my career because I am too good not to,” Zverev shared.

Comparisons to Djokovic

Zverev likened Sinner’s game to that of Djokovic, citing the Italian’s consistency, movement, and baseline play.

“He is very, very similar to Novak at his best,” Zverev noted. “They barely miss and make you feel like you have to overhit to win a rally. It’s incredibly difficult to win points against them.”

Sinner’s Milestone Victory

Sinner’s triumph solidifies his position as the world’s top-ranked player. He joins Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Rafael Nadal as one of the few players to win three successive Grand Slam titles in the Open Era.

Sinner’s precise serves, aggressive returns, and fluid movement neutralized Zverev’s game plan, with the German admitting: “He does almost everything better than me—forehand, backhand, movement, and volleys. He deserved to win today.”

Zverev’s Determination

Despite the loss, Zverev remains committed to his goal of winning a Grand Slam.

“I don’t want to end my career as the best player to never win a Grand Slam. I’ll keep working and doing everything I can,” he vowed.

Zverev’s next challenge will be overcoming his Grand Slam final struggles, but with his determination and skill set, his breakthrough moment may not be far away.
