New Delhi [India]: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notices to the Bihar Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police for a detailed report into an incident in which a group of men reportedly shaved the head of a Scheduled Tribe woman in Bihar’s Araria.
The report should include the status of the FIR, the physical and mental health status of the victim woman and compensation if any, granted to her, a press release issued by the NHRC read adding that the response is expected within four weeks.
The NHRC has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report about the incident that took place in Araria on Friday night. The area where the incident took place comes under the Raniganj police station.
The Commission has observed that the contents of the news report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights, which is a matter of concern, the release said.
According to the media report, the villagers shaved the head of the woman, suspecting the woman of having an illicit relationship with a man in the same village. They also made a video of the incident and uploaded it on social media.
