NZ Skipper Sophie Devine Expresses Confidence To Clinch Title After 58-Run Victory Over India In Opening Match

Ahead of their crucial match against Australia in the 2024 ICC T20 Women’s World Cup, New Zealand captain Sophie Devine highlighted the importance of their recent victory over India, calling it a significant step towards their goal of lifting the tournament title.

Devine stated, “We just want to give absolutely everything to this jersey, to this team and hopefully we can go deep in this tournament, and tonight’s game (win over India) is certainly one step on that journey, But we know, as I said, that there’s still a long way to go in this tournament,” Devine said as quoted by the ICC.

On the other side, Australian pacer Megan Schutt noted the upcoming clash would be a “great match,” pointing out their recent encounters in a T20I series where Australia swept New Zealand 3-0. Schutt mentioned that facing New Zealand again in these conditions would provide a tougher challenge.

Both teams secured comfortable wins in their opening matches, positioning them well as they aim for a place in the knockout stages of the tournament. New Zealand’s impressive 58-run victory over India showcased standout performances, including Devine’s half-century and a formidable bowling display by Rosemary Mair and Lea Tahuhu, who collectively took seven wickets.

As they prepare for their match in Sharjah, conditions may favor slower bowlers, a factor that could impact the outcome.
