In the post-match presentation, Pope expressed gratitude for the efforts shown by his bowlers, particularly on the first two days of the match.
He noted, “Credit to the bowlers for the way they went about their stuff on Day 1 and the majority of Day 2. The fitness they showed was outstanding, as well as the batting performance from Brook and Root. The way to win this game was to put a mammoth score on the board. It wasn’t just a hundred, but it was 260 and 315 or whatever. Credit to them for their skills and determination to put the team in a winning position.”
Pope acknowledged the strategic significance of their first innings score, stating, “When you bat first and make 550, you think you’re in the driving seat. But when you come out to bat again and are 260 runs behind, and the pitch is three days older, it’s never an easy thing to do.” This highlighted how the initial run total set the foundation for England’s success.
Discussing the bowling strategies, Pope pointed out the various wicket-taking opportunities the bowlers seized. He said, “We had a lot of different wicket-taking opportunities. The odd ball was staying low, the odd ball was reversing, and we got the odd ball to spin as well. It’s never an easy position to be in when you’re 260 runs behind. Even if you bat as well as you can and make 400 in that last innings, we still would’ve backed ourselves to chase down around 140 or so.”
Pope specifically praised the performances of key players, including debutant Brydon Carse, who made a significant impact. “The way the two guys with the big runs played was a real credit to them. Brydon bowled brilliantly on debut. He charged in, showed a lot of heart, and never complained once,” he remarked.
He also commended Jack Leach, noting his successful return to the team, saying, “Leach coming back into the side this week—he’s had some success here before. He fit right back into the team and took some crucial wickets for us as well.”
Reflecting on his own batting performance, Pope remained focused on the team’s success rather than personal disappointment, stating, “That’s the game. I smoked a pull shot straight to midwicket. Unfortunately, I was the one to miss out this week, but it’s a team game, and what matters is that we’re on the right side.”
Pope’s remarks highlight the collective effort and strategic execution that led England to their commanding victory over Pakistan, showcasing a well-rounded team performance that will be crucial as they progress in the series.
