Order to wear mask while driving alone absurd: HC

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday described the Delhi Government’s order mandating the wearing of a face mask inside private vehicles as “absurd,” and questioned why it was still in effect under the new circumstances.

“It is a Delhi government order, why don’t you withdraw it. It is absurd actually. You are sitting in your own car and you must wear the mask?” says the bench

“How can such an order, made by the state government in November last year, still be in effect?” said a bench of justices Vipin Sanghi and Jasmeet Singh.

The court’s decision came after senior advocate Rahul Mehra, representing the Delhi government, informed the court that despite a considerable decline in Covid-19 instances, people are being punished for not wearing masks in their own automobiles whether alone or with family members.

The bench further directed the Delhi government to re-examine all of the orders issued by the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) and issue new instructions in the light of the altered scenario, while also ordering the city administration to look into this order.

The matter would be now heard on April 4.
