More than 41,000 people from eight districts in Assam have been affected by floods as heavy rains and strong winds lashed several parts of the state following Cyclone Remal’s landfall on Sunday night. The deluge resulted in one fatality and left two people missing.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), over 26,400 people were affected in the Karimganj district, while 8,351 people were impacted in Cachar and 6,227 in Hailakandi. In Karimganj, floodwaters submerged 66 villages and washed away portions of five embankments. Many residents were forced to leave their homes and seek shelter in safer areas as floodwaters inundated their houses.
The first wave of flooding affected 143 villages across 16 revenue circles in the districts of Nagaon, Hailakandi, Karbi Anglong West, Karimganj, Cachar, Hojai, Golaghat, and Karbi Anglong. Floodwaters submerged 336 hectares of crop area. The ASDMA report confirmed that one person died in Karimganj, while two people are missing in Cachar.
To aid those affected, the administration has established 155 relief camps and 715 relief distribution centers in the flood-hit districts. Additionally, more than 2.27 lakh animals have been impacted by the floods. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Fire and Emergency Services, and local administration are actively engaged in rescue operations in Karimganj and Cachar. The floodwaters have also damaged four roads, two bridges, culverts, and six embankments.
The water levels of the Brahmaputra River, the Barak River, and their tributaries are rising due to incessant rainfall in Assam, Mizoram, and other parts of the Northeast. Several landslides have also been reported in the districts of Dima Hasao, Cachar, and Hailakandi.
