November 10, 2024: Pakistan’s comprehensive all-round performance led them to a memorable series win in Australia, as they secured a 2-1 victory in the three-match ODI series at Perth Stadium. This series win marked Pakistan’s first ODI series triumph in Australia in over two decades, with the last such win dating back to 2002.
Chasing a modest total of 141 runs, Pakistan’s openers, Saim Ayub and Abdullah Shafique, showed patience and intent, putting up a steady partnership. They brought up their 50-run stand in just 11 overs, with Ayub’s aggressive strokeplay and Shafique’s solid defense providing a good foundation. The first breakthrough came in the 18th over when Shafique (37 off 53 balls) was dismissed by Lance Morris. Shortly after, Ayub (42 off 52 balls), who had been playing a controlled knock, was sent back by Morris as well.
With Pakistan at 85/2, Mohammad Rizwan (a standout performer throughout the series) and Babar Azam came together at the crease. The duo combined well, with Rizwan’s calm composure and Babar’s usual elegance guiding the team toward victory. The pair forged an unbeaten 50-run partnership in just 5.3 overs, and Pakistan comfortably chased down the target on the penultimate ball of the 27th over, securing an eight-wicket win.
Earlier, Australia had been dismissed for just 140 runs in 31.5 overs. Pakistan’s bowlers dominated the proceedings, with Shaheen Afridi (3/32), Naseem Shah (3/54), and Haris Rauf (2/24) sharing the bulk of the wickets. Sean Abbott was the top scorer for Australia with 30 runs, while Matthew Short contributed 22. Australia’s innings faltered against Pakistan’s disciplined bowling attack, which bundled them out well short of a competitive total.
This win was a collective effort for Pakistan, with their bowlers leading the charge and the batters stepping up when it mattered. It was a historic series win that will be remembered for years to come.
