On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid homage to the brave freedom fighters who participated in the historic ‘Quit India Movement’ led by Mahatma Gandhi. Emphasizing the pivotal role of the movement in India’s struggle for independence, PM Modi highlighted its impact in galvanizing the nation against colonial rule.
“Homage to all those who took part in the Quit India Movement under Bapu’s leadership. It was truly a watershed moment in our freedom struggle,” PM Modi said in a post on X.
In addition to his post, the Prime Minister shared a video message commemorating the event. He connected the spirit of the movement to modern-day challenges, saying, “Today, India is saying in one voice: Corruption Quit India. Dynasty Quit India. Appeasement Quit India,” echoing the call to action that Gandhi once made.
The Quit India Movement, also known as the “Bharat Chodo Andolan,” was initiated by Mahatma Gandhi on August 9, 1942, during the Second World War. The movement demanded an immediate end to British rule in India and played a crucial role in the eventual withdrawal of the British. Gandhi’s call for “an orderly British withdrawal from India” mobilized millions of Indians, with his message of “Do or Die” resonating across the country. The movement began at Gawalia Tank in Mumbai and remains a significant milestone in India’s journey to independence.
Observed annually as August Kranti Day, this day serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by countless Indians in their quest for freedom.
