“Project Punjab,” Which Attracted Me, Says Ricky Ponting On His Decision To Join Punjab Kings As Head Coach

Ricky Ponting, the newly-appointed head coach of Punjab Kings (PBKS) for the 2025 IPL season, has shared insights into his decision-making process, stating that it was the “Project Punjab” concept that ultimately drew him in.

In an interview, Ponting admitted he had discussions with several franchises but saw the challenge of reviving PBKS as particularly enticing.

He explained that the team’s history of frequent coaching changes and its struggle for success provided a unique challenge. “Yes, I was talking to a few teams, but it was ‘Project Punjab’ which attracted me. It is a team that hasn’t had a lot of success over a long period of time,” he said.

Ponting expressed his desire to attract young talent back to the franchise and build a competitive squad capable of clinching the IPL title.

Despite Punjab Kings’ history of possessing strong players, Ponting noted that they have yet to secure a championship. He emphasized his commitment to turning that around, stating, “I have a longish-term deal there, and hopefully, during that period of time we can win the IPL.”

Having been the third head coach in four seasons for PBKS, Ponting is stepping in after the team finished ninth in the 2024 season and has not reached the playoffs since 2014.

Previously, he enjoyed a successful stint with the Delhi Capitals, leading them to three consecutive playoff appearances from 2019 to 2021, including their first final in 2020.

Reflecting on his departure from Delhi Capitals, Ponting expressed disappointment but acknowledged the reasons behind it.

He stated, “I’m very happy to be back in the IPL… The thing that keeps drawing me back is the level of cricket and the quality of players you get to work with.”

He views his role with Punjab Kings as a significant coaching challenge and is optimistic about aligning his vision with the management and owners of the franchise.
