Rilee Rossouw’s impressive half-century proved insufficient as Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) bowlers showcased a dominant performance, restricting Punjab Kings (PBKS) to 181 and clinching a decisive 60-run victory at Dharamsala on Thursday.
Rossouw took center stage for PBKS with a dynamic inning, but it wasn’t enough against the aggressive bowling lineup of RCB. After setting a challenging target of 242, RCB’s bowlers dismantled PBKS’s batting lineup, ending their campaign in the tournament.
The match began with PBKS losing opener Prabhsimran Singh early, which set the stage for Rossouw and Jonny Bairstow to build a rapid partnership. Despite their efforts, including Rossouw’s quick 61 from 27 balls and Bairstow’s 27 from 16, RCB’s bowlers kept a tight leash on the game.
Mohammed Siraj led RCB’s bowling attack, claiming three wickets for 43 runs. Lockie Ferguson and Swapnil Singh also made significant contributions with two wickets each, effectively halting PBKS’s chase.
RCB’s earlier innings were powered by Virat Kohli’s dynamic 92 off 47 balls, propelling them to a formidable 241/7. Kohli, alongside contributions from Rajat Patidar and Cameron Green, who scored 55 and 46 respectively, set a solid foundation for their team’s victory.
The loss significantly impacted PBKS’s standings, pushing them further down the points table. Meanwhile, RCB’s win keeps their playoff hopes alive as they seek to improve their position in the remaining matches of IPL 2024.
“Today, our bowlers really stepped up, and I’m proud of how everyone contributed to this crucial win. Rossouw batted exceptionally well, but fortunately, our bowling strategy paid off,” commented an RCB spokesperson after the match.
The series continues to provide thrilling cricket action, with teams vying for supremacy in the highly competitive IPL 2024 season.
