A Western That Starts Strong, But Loses Its Sting

Andrew Patterson’s The Rivals of Amziah King begins with undeniable charm, setting up a world that blends the intimacy of small-town life with a quirky, offbeat narrative. With a strong lead in Matthew McConaughey and an endearing supporting cast, the film captures a distinct slice of Americana, complete with banjos, bees, and a brewing conflict that slowly turns into a full-blown heist thriller.

McConaughey’s Amziah King is a beekeeper with a cowboy’s swagger, a man at ease with his surroundings, who acts as the unofficial guardian of his Oklahoma town. He’s the guy everyone knows and trusts—so when stolen barrels of honey appear, the local cops turn to him for help. But what starts as an amusing side quest quickly spirals into a chaotic adventure involving his estranged foster daughter Kateri (Angelina LookingGlass), stolen bees, and a crime kingpin (Kurt Russell) who’s running an underground operation.

The film’s first half is full of charm—quirky characters, foot-tapping music, and heartfelt moments between Amziah and Kateri as she learns the delicate art of beekeeping. There’s even a thrilling subplot where they rescue a beehive trapped inside an elementary school wall. But as the film transitions into a revenge-fueled heist, it struggles to balance its tones, shifting from tender storytelling to a more exaggerated Western crime drama.

Despite its uneven pacing, The Rivals of Amziah King offers plenty to admire. McConaughey is effortlessly charismatic, LookingGlass brings authenticity to her role, and Patterson’s direction, though occasionally indulgent, paints a compelling picture of rural resilience. While the second act falters, the film remains a unique and heartfelt entry into the modern Western genre.
