November 21, 2024: Mohammed Shami has fired back at cricketer-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar following his remarks about Shami’s potential price drop in the IPL 2025 mega auction. Manjrekar had suggested that Shami’s injury history could lead to a dip in his value during the auction, citing concerns that his past injuries might cause him to break down mid-season, limiting a franchise’s options.
Shami, who recently made a strong return to competitive cricket after a year-long recovery from an ankle injury, showcased his brilliance with a match-winning performance in the Ranji Trophy, taking a staggering 7/57 and leading Bengal to victory. His stellar form raised expectations for a higher price tag at the upcoming IPL auction. Despite this, Manjrekar’s comments suggested a different narrative, highlighting the risk teams might perceive in investing heavily in Shami due to his injury history.
In response, Shami took to Instagram with a cheeky jibe at Manjrekar. He wrote, “Baba ki jai ho. Thodsa gyan apne future k lie bhi bacha lo kaam ayega Sanjay G? Kisi ko future janna ho to sir se mile” (Save some knowledge for your future. It will be useful. If anybody wants to know their future, meet him), implying that Manjrekar should save some of his predictions for himself. The playful remark quickly garnered attention on social media, adding a humorous twist to the ongoing IPL auction buzz.
Shami’s performance in the 2023 IPL season was anything but uncertain. He was the leading wicket-taker, claiming 28 wickets in 17 matches at an economy rate of 8.04, winning the coveted Purple Cap ahead of other top bowlers like Rashid Khan, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Arshdeep Singh. His dominance with the ball last season proved that he remains one of the most formidable pacers in the IPL, regardless of his injury past.
As of now, Shami will continue his cricket journey in the domestic circuit, having been named in Bengal’s squad for the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. His performances in these tournaments could further solidify his value as a key asset in IPL 2025, regardless of Manjrekar’s concerns.
