Mumbai (Maharashtra): BJP legislator Rahul Narvekar easily went past the majority mark as voting to elect the Maharashtra Assembly Speaker was held via head count. He was up against Shiv Sena MLA Rajan Salvi of the Uddhav Thackeray team.

BJP candidate Rahul Narwekar received 164 votes through head count. Final head count against him is 107.

The election for the post of Assembly Speaker is crucial in view of the recent turn of events in the state.

Legal experts say that the Speaker may dismiss the disqualification proceedings against 16 rebel MLAs, including newly sworn-in Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

The disqualification notices were issued to them by Deputy Speaker Narhari Zirwal last month.

The post has been lying vacant since Nana Patole of Congress resigned in February 2021 to become his party’s state unit president.

Deputy Speaker Narhari Zirwal had been officiating as the acting Speaker.

MLAs on Opposition benches shouted “ED, ED” when Shiv Sena’s Yamini Yashwant Jadhav registered her head count for the Speaker’s election in the Assembly.

Samajwadi Party (SP) abstained from voting against BJP candidate Rahul Narwekar. Both its MLAs Abu Azmi and Raees Shaikh kept sitting during the head count.

AIMIM also abstained from voting against BJP candidate.
