January 22, 2025: Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has highlighted that the upcoming T20I series against England could be a “final opportunity” for Abhishek Sharma to make a lasting impact and establish himself as a regular member of India’s T20I team. Despite his explosive talent, Abhishek’s inconsistency in recent performances has kept him in a tough battle for an opening spot against the likes of Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Ruturaj Gaikwad.
Chopra emphasized that while Abhishek had shown promise with a memorable century against Zimbabwe, his subsequent performances had been inconsistent, and he had not been able to capitalize on the early potential. For Abhishek, this series represents a critical opportunity to showcase his skills and secure his place in the squad, as other young players, like Jaiswal, are waiting for their chances.

In the 12 T20Is he has played, Abhishek has scored 256 runs at an average of 23.27, with a strike rate of 171.81, including a century and a half-century. However, his inconsistency in crossing the 20-run mark has raised concerns. On the domestic front, Abhishek has been in great form, scoring 255 runs at an average of 42.50 and a strike rate of 216.10 in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, along with strong performances in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Chopra expressed his belief in Abhishek’s ability but also cautioned that the series would be crucial for him to prove himself. “These five matches are vital—go ahead and live your life,” Chopra said, urging Abhishek to grab this opportunity.
With the competition for places in the Indian squad becoming fiercer, Abhishek’s ability to perform under pressure will be key in determining his future in the national team.
