Abhishek Sharma Downplays Competition With Gill, Jaiswal For Opening Slot After Firing Record-Breaking Ton At Wankhede

February 3, 2025: Abhishek Sharma’s breakout performance in the fifth T20I against England at Wankhede Stadium was nothing short of spectacular, and his humble attitude toward the competition for the opening spot in India’s T20I side shows his maturity.

His 135(54) was a dazzling display of power and timing, making it clear that he has what it takes to be a fixture at the top of the order. With the second-fastest T20I century for India under his belt, he certainly made a strong case for himself, even with Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal waiting in the wings once their focus shifts back to T20Is.

It’s interesting how Abhishek described the camaraderie between the three openers, emphasizing that there has never been a competition among them. Their shared dream from their Under-16 days of representing India is a testament to their mutual respect and support, which is rare in competitive sports. His relationship with the other players is built on trust and a collective goal to perform for India, rather than any personal rivalries. This kind of bond, especially between young players, is what makes Indian cricket so promising for the future.

The influence of his senior teammates, especially Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya, also played a key role in his incredible knock. Suryakumar’s advice to take his time after a wicket fell seemed to calm Abhishek’s nerves and helped him unlock a more controlled aggression. This guidance in the middle, especially when he was in the 80s or 90s, helped him accelerate without losing his composure, making his century even more remarkable.

Abhishek’s acknowledgment of the support from players like Suryakumar, Hardik, and coach Gautam Gambhir, as well as his gratitude for the mentorship from Yuvraj Singh, shows how important a nurturing environment is for young talents. The belief shown in him by such experienced players has given him the confidence to perform at the highest level, and it’s clear that Abhishek is more than just a talented batsman—he’s someone who knows how to absorb pressure and thrive when it matters most.

His performance in this series will likely have a lasting impact on his career, and it’s exciting to think about what’s next for him in Indian cricket. How do you see his role developing in the team moving forward, especially once the likes of Gill and Jaiswal return to T20 cricket?
