After Test Retirement, Rohit Sharma Meets Devendra Fadnavis—Big Hint at What’s Next?

May 14, 2025: Just days after announcing his retirement from Test cricket, Indian batting legend Rohit Sharma paid a courtesy visit to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at his official residence, Varsha. The meeting came nearly a week after Sharma revealed on social media that he would be stepping away from the longest format of the game.

Chief Minister Fadnavis took to social media to share pictures of the meeting and extended his congratulations and good wishes to the cricketer.

“It was great to welcome, meet and interact with Indian cricketer Rohit Sharma at my official residence Varsha. I extended my best wishes to him on his retirement from Test cricket and for continued success in the next chapter of his journey,” Fadnavis wrote.

Rohit Sharma’s Test Legacy

Rohit Sharma, 38, leaves behind a significant mark in Indian Test cricket. Over 68 Tests, he amassed 4301 runs at an average of 40.57, which includes 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries. Remarkably, all 12 of his Test tons came in matches that India won — a testament to his ability to deliver when it mattered most.

While his Test debut was delayed by an unfortunate ankle injury in 2010, Rohit eventually made his debut in 2013 in Kolkata with a commanding 177-run knock. For several years, he occupied a middle-order role, showing flashes of brilliance but never quite settling into the red-ball side.

It was only in October 2019, when he was promoted to open the innings, that his Test career took a definitive turn. Rohit responded to the new role emphatically, scoring two centuries and a double century in a three-Test home series against South Africa — firmly establishing himself as a dependable Test opener.

As he shifts focus to limited-overs cricket and mentorship roles, Rohit’s Test career will be remembered for its late bloom and crucial contributions to Team India’s success.
